Riding back in time / May 10-11

Our first stop brought us to the border between the western Great Smokey Mountains and the Ridge-and-Valley region in eastern Tennessee. Under the Coastal Carolina canopy on the campground, we got a great introduction into the geological framework of the region, and an overview on the sedimentary processes responsible for the infilling of sedimentary basins. Whilst the Canada geese were airborne guests, we learnt how to interpret climate changes from sedimentary succession in a basin.
