Graduate students in CMWS 603 completed a Washington, D.C. intensive study with meetings in the West Wing of the White House with senior Presidential Staff regarding development of environmental policy.  Through a series of meetings on Capital Hill, with K Street Lobbyists and White House Staff, the graduate students were introduced to the inner workings of Congressional actions and Federal Executive’s rule-making processes.  The experiential learning environment developed a firsthand understanding of the application of sound science in complex statutory and regulatory matters.  The meetings with key officials were supplemented by a probing examination by Dr. Pam Martin on the Intersection of Science and Policy. Each meeting and its venue were selected in order to allow an introduction and appreciation for real world influences and processes by which federal laws and regulations are developed.
