Particle Settling Velocities in Turbulence

The final stage of sediment transport involves the deposition of particles onto the seabed.  Through controlled laboratory experiments, we examine the impact of turbulence on the settling velocity of various particle types.  The turbulence is generated using an oscillating grid facility.  A high-speed camera is used to image the trajectories of the descending particles, and image-processing is performed to compute particle characteristics such as velocity and acceleration.  Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is used to characterize the flow conditions in the tank.
