The primary objective of the mapping project was to provide data in support of better understanding the sediment and water exchange process between intertidal areas and tidal creeks of the Duplin River. To complete the study, the Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies (BCCMWS) surveyed the Duplin River using the Simrad EM3002D Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) in December 2009. The multibeam bathymetry data were merged with airborne LIDAR topography data to create a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM).
Simrad EM3002 MBES also collected backscatter intensity data during the survey in 2009. Backscatter intensity imagery can derive the classication of sediment characteristics. The integrated DEM and backscatter intensity imagery provide detailed information to interpret geomorphological attributes to analyze tidal dynamics of the Duplin River.
This area is part of the GCE-LTER study funded through NSF to the University of Georgia. For more information about the LTER, visit http://gce-lter.marsci.uga.edu/.
