Jim Caudle Artificial Reef Mapping

Experience Type:
MSCI 499, Directed Undergraduate Research
Date Participated:
August, 2009 to December, 2009
Experience Description:
I mapped the Jim Caudle Artificial Reef off of Little River, SC, using multibeam sonar. The artificial reef currently has a sunken barge, multiple subway cars, and other smaller debris to attract marine life. After data collection in the field, I processed the data in order to increase the overall quality of the data. I also produced a fly-through simulation of the site for presentation purposes. Throughout the semester I learned in-depth knowledge of multibeam sonar from my professor, Dr. Rich Viso.
I was impressed to see how the skills we learn in the classroom are applied in the real world. I gained knowledge and experience from which students cannot receive in the classroom.
