Regional Sediment Management Project

Experience Type:
Student Employee
Date Participated:
May, 2009 to December, 2009
Experience Description:
During the summer, I worked on a Regional Sediment Management project for the Army Corps of Engineers. Sediment samples were taken from North and South Islands near Winyah Bay, SC. Samples included the dune, beach, surfzone, and offshore environments. Since the area is remote and only accessible by boat, we transported two four-wheelers on a pontoon boat owned by CCU. We collected the samples via the four-wheelers up and down the coast. Back in the lab, I conducted grain size analysis in order to determine grain size and sorting for each sample. Once the data was complete, I completed many graphs and tables to represent the data. This project was a great opportunity in order to prepare me for future jobs in marine geology.
This project was a big factor that I decided to declare marine geology as my main area of focus within the marine science major at CCU.
